This is 100% Oppo’s fault and whatever happens is all on your hands. Hope you’re happy.

So.... I drove towards a snowstorm with my best friend (in her Veloster N that she got on the way to the Dragon meet) to Long Island. Then I bought- a-miata. Couldn’t make it more than 2 miles so I’m in a hotel for the night.

We had a car exactly like that for 15 years... classic red 99 non-LS but with Peferred Equipment Pack that brought cruise control and a Torsen LSD, etc, with the black cloth interior, rather than the LS’s tan leather.

It was a fantastic car, although a bit out of it’s element on long interstate highway jaunts... Sublime on the back-roads though.

We put snow tires on it and drove it in the winter some winters, but it was better when we didn’t have to.

Only sold it because we moved, stopped commuting, and started renovating a house, so a pickup truck for work, and a Jeep for daily driving and road trips just kept the Miata in the garage most of the time.

Good luck, good choice, and hope you enjoy it well... it is a great little car.

Very nice! Mine is an 01, and the original owner was a badass, I think. Limited skip, sport package with the extra chassis bracing and big brake kit, but opted not for ABS.

Gonna have to say it: overrated except for hard core track use or turbo miatas . I have the MeisterR set for literally half the cost, if not a bit less. Car handles impeccably. Autocross I’m limited by tire grip, evenly at all four corners (though I haven’t stepped up to the Bridgestones yet). This car just does not have the power to push it to the limits xidas (or ohlins, fox, etc) provide without power added, or you’re if chasing literal tenths of seconds in competition. Save you money, or better yet, waste the same amount on more parts, like I did

I’ll say that they’re overkill, but not overrated. Like you, I’ve got an almost perfect autox suspension setup, but I’ve also got a car that rides like an S-class when I want it to. And the adjustments make such a huge difference too, unlike most of the flyin’ Miata and similar level coilovers I’ve driven. Now I just have the mid-tier “race” xidas, not the “ace” I linked to, but the thought of having an electronically controllable version of my current suspension that can be adjusted in-cabin or hooked up to an aftermarket ecu or traction control setup and automatically a djusted 100 times per second b ased on what track you’re racing? And STILL give that Mercedes-like ride quality when you want it? Swoon.

But yeah, definitely overkill. Those are $5k minimum plus a somewhat tricky install for me they’re in the same tier as Trackspeed Engineering’s Borg-Warner EFR turbo kit, a quafe sequential transmission, and... I don't even know. If oppo wants to chip in I'll happily review a set for everybody!

It’s not the lowering that’s scary -- it’s raising it back up. When it’s super cold, that’s really not a great idea. Shrinkage in the cold makes it a challenge and you’re more likely to damage something. That said, it’s doable (see AiM)

I think that’s fair: overkill, not overrated. Like poor_sh said , you could buy another Miata for that. My overrated sentiment comes from the miata.net crowd, where half the people will shout down any budget suspension option, like the MeisterR or BC or tein as not being worth anything as they’re not as good as xidas. No shit, no one is saying they are, and xidas better damn well b e better for what they charge.
